Roller Shades vs Zebra Blinds
Roller shades and zebra blinds are the two most popular custom window coverings in Vancouver. They install the same way and cost about the same — the difference is how they handle the view. Here is how to choose.

Choose Roller Shades If
You want one clean panel and a specific job done
Roller shades are the simplest possible window covering: one fabric, one roll, no visible hardware if you add a cassette. Because you pick the exact opacity, they do one job extremely well — full blackout in a bedroom, or 3% sheer glare control at a desk.
They're also the least expensive way to cover a lot of windows consistently, and they're the easiest to keep clean in kitchens and bathrooms.
- Best for bedrooms needing true blackout
- Best for offices with screen glare
- Lowest cost per window across a whole home

Choose Zebra Blinds If
You want view and privacy from the same shade
Zebra blinds put sheer and solid bands on one shade. Line the sheer bands up and you get filtered daylight and a soft view out; offset them and the solid bands close for privacy. That flexibility is why they dominate Vancouver condos and living rooms.
They won't produce a fully dark room, so we usually pair zebra in living areas with blackout shades in bedrooms.
- Best for living rooms and dining rooms
- Best where the view matters but so does evening privacy
- Not for bedrooms needing complete darkness

Our recommendation
In most Vancouver homes we install both: zebra blinds where people spend the day and want the view, blackout roller shades in bedrooms. Because both use the same brackets and motors, they can be ordered together, motorized together, and run from one remote.
If you have to choose only one style for the whole home, zebra blinds are the more flexible pick — unless anyone in the household sleeps during daylight hours, in which case blackout roller shades come first.
